Why choose a 140cm by 70cm standing desk?

This size of top gives you 0.98 square metres to work on. That is 36% more than the common 120 x 60cm size and 17% more than a 60cm-deep one, but it takes up far less floor than a 160 x 80cm model. For one person with a laptop, one or two monitors, a keyboard, a lamp and some paperwork, it is roomy without dominating the room.

The extra 10cm of depth over a 60cm desk matters more than it sounds. The HSE's advice on posture is to have the top of your screen level with your eyes and "about an arm's length away", with the keyboard just below elbow height and both straight in front of you so you don't twist (HSE: good posture at a workstation). On 70cm you can set a monitor stand near the back and still keep the keyboard and mouse at the front with space to rest your wrists.

What fits on a 140cm top?

A 16:9 monitor's panel is about 87% of its diagonal wide: roughly 53cm for a 24-inch, 60cm for a 27-inch and 71cm for a 32-inch, before bezels. A 34-inch 21:9 ultrawide is about 79cm and a 49-inch super ultrawide about 120cm.

In a long, narrow box room, 60cm keeps the walkway clear. In most other rooms the 70cm depth is the better buy, and 80cm is worth it if you run a 32-inch screen or bigger.

How to choose a 140cm standing desk

Height range for your build

Sit, then stand, in the shoes you usually wear. Bend your elbows to 90 degrees and measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm. Both numbers need to fall inside the frame's range. Taller users should look at the Desktronic HomePro (127cm) or Flexispot ValtreX (125cm). Shorter users, and anyone who games low, also do best with these two, as they drop to 62cm and 60cm, well below a standard 72cm table. The Sanodesk and Kowo stop at 118cm, which suits average heights.

Single or dual motor

A single motor drives both legs through a shaft and is fine for a laptop and one or two monitors. A dual motor frame puts a motor in each leg, so it lifts more, more evenly and usually faster, and tends to last longer under a heavy load. The HomePro and ValtreX are both rated at 160kg and the Dellonda at 100kg, against 60kg for the Kowo. Top: thickness, joins and material

Tops in this size run from 6mm glass to 25mm board. A 25mm top, as on the HomePro and Dellonda, flexes less and holds a monitor arm clamp more securely. Budget models often ship the top in two or three pieces joined underneath, which keeps the box small but leaves a seam you can feel with a mouse. Storage, USB and cable management

On a 140cm top every centimetre counts, so built-in storage helps. The Sanodesk and Kowo both have a drawer under the top, and the HomePro, Sanodesk and Kowo add USB-C charging. Safety and noise

Anti-collision sensing stops the frame and reverses it if it meets a chair arm, windowsill or shelf. The HomePro and ValtreX have it, and our anti-collision desks list more. Motor noise is quoted at under 45dB for the ValtreX and under 50dB for the Dellonda, roughly the hum of a quiet office.

Will a 140cm standing desk fit your room?

Allow the full footprint plus about a metre behind it for your chair to roll back. At full height the top rises to as much as 127cm, so check it clears windowsills, radiators and wall shelves, and that your socket is close enough for the cable to reach at the top of its travel.

Weight is the other thing to plan for. The Kowo weighs 36.5kg, the Dellonda 52kg and the HomePro 60kg, although its listing says one person can assemble it. Dual motor frames with thick tops are heavy, so measure your hallway and stairs against the box size before you order.

Already have a top you like? A frame on its own can work out cheaper. The ValtreX frame takes tops from 120cm to 180cm long and 60cm to 80cm deep, so a 140cm by 70cm worktop fits it. If you only want to try standing first, a standing desk converter sits on your existing desk.

Getting the most from your standing desk

1. Save your heights. Set one preset for sitting and one for standing, so changing takes one press.
2. Change position often. The HSE says short, frequent breaks are better than longer ones taken less often, and that changes of activity should let you get up and move (HSE: breaks and work routine).
3. Use a monitor arm. It frees the space under the screen, which on a 140cm top gives you room for a notepad or laptop.
4. Keep the PC off the top. An under-desk mount that rises with the frame saves 20-25cm of width.

About 55 x 27.5 inches. Desks sold as 55 inches wide are 140cm, but check the depth, as many are 60cm (23.6 inches).

Will two monitors fit on a 140cm desk?

Yes. Two 24-inch or two 27-inch screens fit side by side, at about 106cm and 120cm. Two 32-inch screens are about 142cm wide, so they need a dual arm and a slight angle, or a 160cm top.

Is 70cm deep enough?

For most people, yes. It lets you set a 27-inch screen back at arm's length with a keyboard in front. If you use a 32-inch screen or bigger, or draw on a large tablet, 80cm gives you more room.

Can two people share a 140cm desk?
