Why choose a glass top desk?

A glass desk changes how a room feels. Light passes through or bounces off it, so a small study or box room looks more open than it would with a heavy wooden desk. It is non-porous, so coffee rings, ink and sticky fingers wipe away rather than soaking in, and it doesn't chip at the edges the way melamine (MFC) does.

Tempered glass: how strong is it?

Every desk top here is tempered (also called toughened) glass. It is made by heating ordinary annealed glass and cooling it rapidly, which makes it several times stronger. If it does break, it crumbles into small, blunt fragments rather than long sharp shards. Pilkington explains toughened glass and the BS EN 12150 standard it is made to.

Two practical points follow from that:

• It can't be drilled or cut afterwards. Any holes or cut-outs have to be made before toughening. Monitor arms must clamp to the edge, so check the clamp range suits the thickness of the top and that the desk frame supports it.
• The edges are the weak spot. A hard knock on a corner is far more likely to cause damage than a heavy weight in the middle. Take care during assembly and when moving it.

How thick should the glass be?

Electric standing desks use a relatively thin sheet to keep the moving weight down: the Kowo G2 Vetra uses 6mm, the Liftsync model 6.35mm and the Joy Worker 8mm. Fixed executive glass desks often use 10-19mm, but it doesn't have a motor to lift it. On a sit-stand desk the top usually sits on a steel sub-frame or a backing panel, so the thinner sheet is fully supported.

How to choose the right one

Size and room

Measure the space first. The compact 88-89cm wide desks fit a bedroom alcove or a small study and leave room for a laptop and one screen. At 120cm you have space for two monitors side by side; our 120cm range covers every material. For a deeper, wider workspace, the 140cm models give extra elbow room, and a corner suits the L-shaped layouts.

Height range

Almost every desk here goes down to 71-73cm and up to around 118cm. That covers most adults, but if you're on the shorter side, check the lowest setting against your seated elbow height; the Elevate 120, which goes down to 69cm, sits lowest. Storage and charging

A glass top can't have drawers cut into it, so storage comes as a slim box or partitioned tray hung underneath. Sizes vary a lot: the Casart's drawer holds 3.75 litres, the Elevate's 10 litres, and the Innovar 48 inch spreads 30 litres across three drawers. Safety features

Black or white glass?

White glass looks brighter and hides dust well but shows coffee drips. Black glass looks smart under a dark monitor setup and suits gaming rooms, but shows dust, fingerprints and smears more. Most of these desks are painted on the underside, so they're opaque rather than see-through, which hides cables and drawer contents.

Living with glass: the downsides and how to fix them

• Fingerprints and smears. A microfibre cloth and a splash of glass cleaner sort it in seconds. A desk pad under your keyboard cuts down handprints where your wrists rest.
• Noise. Mugs and phones clink on a hard surface. Coasters and a felt or leather pad soften it.
• Cold to touch. The surface feels cool first thing in winter. A large desk mat fixes this and protects the surface too.
• Mouse tracking. Optical mice can struggle on glossy or clear surfaces. Use a mouse mat, or a mouse designed to track on glass such as Logitech's Darkfield models.
• Weight. A glass desk is heavy for its size, so moving it is often a two-person job. The models on lockable wheels (Joy Worker, Gibbon Mounts G5D, JYLH Joyseeker) are much easier to shift around a room.

Assembly and care

1. Unpack the top last and lay it on its protective packaging or a blanket, never directly on a hard floor.
2. Build the frame first, then lift the top on with two people, holding it flat rather than by one corner.
3. Don't overtighten the screws that hold the panel to the frame; firm is enough.
4. Run the frame through its full range once before loading it, so you can check nothing catches.
5. Clean with a soft cloth and glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads and scouring powders, which can dull the surface.
6. Keep the desk within its rated load, and spread heavy items rather than stacking them at one edge.

Is a glass desk safe?

Yes, when it's tempered glass, which all the desks here use. It is much stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards. Treat the edges with care and keep within the weight limit.

How much weight can a glass standing desk hold?

Most single-motor models in this collection are rated for 50-60kg. The Joy Worker is rated for 79kg, the Casart for 90kg static, and the dual-motor Innovar L-shaped for 100kg.

Can you write on a glass desk?

On most, yes. Dry-wipe markers wipe off a tempered surface easily, which makes white glass handy for quick notes and to-do lists. Test a corner first.

Does a mouse work on glass?

Not always. Many optical mice track poorly on glossy or transparent surfaces. A mouse mat is the simple fix.

Do glass desks scratch easily?

Tempered glass resists everyday scratches well, but grit dragged across it can leave marks. Lift items rather than sliding them, and use a pad under your keyboard.

Can I fit a monitor arm to a glass desk?

Only a clamp-on arm, and only where the frame or a backing panel sits under the clamp. The top can't be drilled for a grommet once toughened. If you want two screens on arms, check the frame's load rating covers them.
