Is a 120cm desk big enough?
For most people working from home, yes. The UK display screen regulations ask for a work surface that is "sufficiently large" to allow "a flexible arrangement of the screen, keyboard, documents and related equipment" (Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, Schedule). At 120cm wide you can centre a monitor and keyboard in front of you and still have room either side for a notepad, a lamp or a laptop on a stand.
Where it starts to feel tight is when you add a second large screen, a gaming PC on the top and a console. One Reddit user who bought one this size for a gaming setup with a PS5 found it cramped; the common advice in the replies was to move the PC tower to the floor or step up to 140cm or 160cm.
How many monitors will fit?
The width of a 16:9 screen is about 87% of its diagonal, so the panel of a 24-inch monitor is roughly 53cm across and a 27-inch about 60cm, before you add the bezels. That gives a simple rule of thumb:
- One monitor of any size: plenty of room, even a 34-inch ultrawide (about 80cm wide).
- Two 24-inch monitors: around 108cm side by side, so they fit with a little to spare.
- Two 27-inch monitors: around 122cm, wider than the top. Angle them in on a dual monitor arm, or look at our dual monitor desks and 140cm models.
- Three screens: go for 160cm and wider.
120 x 60 vs 120 x 70 vs 120 x 80
Width gets all the attention, but depth decides how comfortable your screen is. The HSE guidance on good posture puts the top of the screen at eye level and "about an arm's length away", with the keyboard "just below elbow height" and the mouse in line with your elbow.
- 120 x 60cm is the standard size and covers most of this collection. It suits a laptop or one monitor on a stand, and fits a typical box room or bedroom wall.
- 120 x 70cm gives an extra 10cm to push a 27-inch screen back to a comfortable distance and still rest your forearms on the top.
- 120 x 80cm is the deepest common option, for big monitors, drawing tablets or a keyboard and paperwork side by side. The Pokar 120 x 80 model in our range carries 160kg.
Many listings quote 48 x 24 inches. That converts to 121.9 x 61cm, so it is effectively the same footprint as a 120 x 60.

These are the in-stock models in our range, using the figures each maker lists on Amazon. A dash means the spec isn't published.

Two things stand out. The ranges run from 50kg to 160kg of lifting capacity, and the lowest heights vary from 60cm to 75cm, which matters a lot if you are shorter than average.
How to choose a 120cm desk
Height range
To find your own numbers, sit and then stand in the shoes you normally wear, bend your elbows to 90 degrees and measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm. Both figures should sit inside the frame's range with a few centimetres to spare. Most models here start at 69-72cm and top out around 115-118cm. If you are tall, the Desktronic (127cm), ValtreX (125cm) and Dellonda DH56 (123cm) go higher; if you are petite, the ValtreX (60cm) and Desktronic (62cm) come lower than a standard 72cm table. The Sanodesk's 75-110cm is the narrowest span.

Single or dual motor
A single motor drives both legs through a shaft and keeps cost down; the Dellonda models are rated for 50kg on one motor. Dual motor frames put one in each leg and lift more, faster and more evenly: the ValtreX and Desktronic both handle 160kg. If you run two monitors on arms, a PC tower on the top or lean on it to write, our dual motor desks and heavy duty desks are worth the extra.

Desktop material and colour
Laminated engineered wood is the norm, in white, black, oak, maple, walnut and rustic brown finishes. Tempered glass tops (Elevate, Casart, Dellonda DH54) wipe clean and look smart but show fingerprints; see our glass top desks. For a warmer look, browse wood-effect desks or a natural bamboo top. Several makers in this range, including Sanodesk, Agilestic and Bizum, quote FSC-certified materials.
Storage, USB and cable management
Space on this size of top is precious, so built-in extras help. The Elevate 120 has a 10-litre drawer, the Agilestic two fabric drawers holding 10 litres between them, and the Casart a slim 3.75-litre glass drawer. USB-A and USB-C charging is built into the Elevate, Dellonda DH54, Desktronic and Casart, which saves an adaptor on the top. Compare more desks with drawers and desks with USB ports, and check for a cable tray or clips so the leads rise and fall with the frame.

Safety and noise
Anti-collision sensing stops and reverses the frame if it meets a chair arm or windowsill on the way down, which matters in a small room. The Elevate, Casart, Sanodesk, Bizum, Yihayo and ValtreX all list it, and our anti-collision desks cover the rest. A child lock is useful in a family home. Noise is usually quoted at 45-55dB; the ValtreX and Innovar are rated at 45dB or under, the Agilestic under 55dB.
Weight and assembly
Lighter frames such as the Innovar (18.6kg), Huanuo (18.8kg) and Yihayo (19kg) are easy to carry up a narrow staircase. The Elevate (44.5kg) and Desktronic (60kg) feel more solid but need two people. Sanodesk and Yihayo quote 30-45 minutes to assemble, and Innovar 30 minutes.

120cm compared with other sizes
| Width | Best for | Monitors |
|---|---|---|
| 100-110cm | Laptop work, very small rooms | One up to 27 inches |
| 120cm | Home office, bedroom, study | One large or two 24-inch |
| 140cm | Gaming, design work, more paperwork | Two 27-inch |
| 160cm+ | Full battlestations, shared desks | Two 27-inch plus extras, or three |
If you want the PC tower, speakers and a console on top, go for PC gaming desks at 140cm or wider. If you mainly work on a laptop with one external screen, this size is the sweet spot.
Making the most of a compact sit-stand desk
- Put the PC on the floor. A tower takes 20-25cm of width. Keep it beside a leg or on an under-desk mount that lifts with the frame.
- Use a monitor arm. It clamps to the back edge, frees the space under the screen and lets you push the display back to arm's length on a 60cm-deep top.
- Save your heights. Set memory presets for sitting and standing so you change position with one press.
- Swap often. The NHS warns that sitting for long periods is bad for your health even if you exercise (NHS: why we should sit less). Alternate through the day rather than standing for hours.
- Leave clearance. Check nothing above or behind the top (shelves, a windowsill, a radiator) will catch it at full height.
120cm desk FAQs
Can it take two monitors?
Two 24-inch monitors fit side by side, taking up about 108cm. Two 27-inch screens need around 122cm, so on this width you will need to angle them in on a dual arm or step up to 140cm.
What is 120cm in inches?
About 47 inches. Many desks are sold as 48 x 24 inches, which is 121.9 x 61cm, almost identical to a 120 x 60cm model.
Is 60cm deep enough?
For a laptop or one monitor up to about 27 inches, yes, especially with a monitor arm. For a large screen or more paperwork, choose 70cm or 80cm deep.
How much weight can these desks hold?
In our range it runs from 50kg (Dellonda single motor models) to 160kg lifting load (Flexispot ValtreX and Desktronic HomePro, both dual motor). Most sit between 70kg and 80kg.
Will this size of desk fit in a small bedroom?
Usually. A 120 x 60cm top covers about 0.7 square metres, well under half the floor area of a UK single bed (90 x 190cm), and a sit-stand frame needs no more room than a fixed desk. Allow space to push your chair back, and check the top clears any windowsill when raised.
Can I use my own worktop?
Yes, with a frame that accepts it. The ValtreX frame is listed for tops from 120cm to 180cm long and 60-80cm deep, and frame-only models such as the Maidesite T2 Pro Max adjust from 108cm wide.
