What is a sit-stand desk?
It is a desk whose whole worktop moves up and down, so the same desk works as a normal seated desk and as a standing workstation. Most are raised by electric motors inside telescopic legs and controlled from a small keypad under the front edge. Cheaper and simpler versions use a hand crank, and converters rest on top of an existing desk and lift only your screen and keyboard.
The point is not to stand all day. It is to change position often. The NHS advice on sitting less says many UK adults sit for around 9 hours a day and links long spells of sitting with obesity, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, so breaking that time up is the goal.
Types of adjustable height sit stand desks
Every model in our range falls into one of five groups. The differences show up in how high and low they go, how much they carry and how quickly they move.
Single motor electric
One motor in one leg drives the other leg through a shaft. These are the lightest and usually the cheapest powered option. In our feed they lift at about 25mm per second and carry 50-80kg, which is plenty for a laptop, one or two screens and a lamp. The Dellonda DH55 goes from 60cm to 123cm on a single motor, while the Yo-Yo Desk Pro 1 runs from 72.5cm to 122.5cm and is rated for users up to 185cm tall.

Dual motor electric
A motor in each leg means quicker, smoother and more level lifting and a much higher load. Twin motor frames in our range lift at 35-50mm per second and carry 80-160kg while moving. Most use 3-stage legs, which is what gives them the wider range: the Flexispot ValtreX and CylineX Pro both run 60cm to 125cm, and the Desktronic HomePro goes from 62cm to 127cm. Browse our dual motor desks or, for a big setup with several screens, heavy duty desks rated up to 200kg.

Manual crank
Turn a handle and the worktop winds up or down. There is no cable, no motor noise and nothing to fail electrically, but going from sitting to standing takes a few dozen turns, so people tend to switch less often. The Win Up Time crank desk covers 75cm to 121cm and carries 68kg.
Converters and platforms
A converter stands on your current desk and lifts the screen and keyboard. It is the cheapest way in and needs no new furniture, but it carries far less (12.7-18.1kg in our feed) and the desk underneath stays at a fixed height. See our standing desk converter range.

Frame only
Buy the legs and fit your own worktop, or reuse the top from an old desk. The Maidesite T1 Pro frame takes tops from 120-140cm wide and 60-70cm deep and lifts 80kg from 72cm to 120cm; the Flexispot CylineX Pro takes anything from 120 x 60cm up to 180 x 81cm.

Figures are the makers' own specs from the listings in this collection. A dash means the listing does not give one.
Choosing the right height range for you
The range matters more than anything else on the spec sheet, and it works at both ends.
- Lowest point: a standard fixed desk is around 72-75cm. If you are shorter than average, or you use a low chair, look for a desk that drops to 60-62cm so your forearms can rest level. Many budget frames stop at 71-75cm.
- Highest point: taller users need more lift. Yo-Yo rates its 122.5cm Pro 1 for people up to 185cm; if you are taller, look at frames that reach 125-127cm, such as the ValtreX or HomePro.
- Two people sharing: a wide range plus memory presets lets each person save their own sitting and standing heights.
The quick test is your elbows. The HSE's guide to good posture at a screen puts the keyboard just below elbow height, the top of the screen level with your eyes and the mouse in line with your elbow. Stand up, let your arms hang, bend your elbows to a right angle and measure from the floor to your forearm. That number, give or take a couple of centimetres, is your standing height, and it needs to fall inside the desk's range.
Features worth paying for
- Memory presets: 2-4 saved heights mean one press takes you from sitting to standing. Without them most people stop switching.
- Anti-collision: the desk stops and reverses if it meets a chair arm or windowsill on the way down. See our desks with anti-collision.
- Noise: most electric frames here are rated under 45-50dB, roughly a quiet conversation, so they will not wake the house.
- 3-stage legs: wider range and less wobble at full height than 2-stage legs.
- Built-in charging: USB-A and USB-C on the keypad, as on the Desktronic HomePro. We have a whole range of desks with USB ports and desks with power sockets.
- Storage: a drawer under the top saves floor space; see our standing desks with drawers.
- Cable management: a tray under the desk and enough slack in every lead so nothing pulls tight at full height.
Size and shape
Width is about what sits on top. A 100-120cm top suits a laptop and one screen, 140cm gives room for two monitors, and 160-180cm takes a full gaming or creative setup. Depth matters as much: 60cm is the minimum for a screen at a comfortable distance, 70-80cm is better with large monitors. Compare our 120cm desks and 160 x 80cm desks, or go round a corner with L-shaped standing desks. For a lighter look there are glass top desks and bamboo desks, and gamers should start with our adjustable gaming desks.

How long should you stand?
Standing still for hours is not the answer either: static standing tires the legs and back. The UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines advise breaking up long periods of sitting with at least light activity. A common rule of thumb is 20 minutes sitting, 8 minutes standing and 2 minutes moving about, then repeat.
There is good UK evidence that the habit sticks. In the SMArT Work trial with NHS office staff in Leicester, people given a height-adjustable workstation plus some simple coaching sat for 83 minutes a day less at work than the comparison group after 12 months, and reported less fatigue and back pain (published in The BMJ).
- Start with 15-30 minutes of standing a couple of times a day and build up.
- Save your sitting and standing heights to presets on day one.
- Wear supportive shoes or use an anti-fatigue mat.
- Raise the screen with the desk, or use a monitor arm, so your neck stays neutral.
- Move: walk to make a drink or take calls on your feet.
Adjustable height sit stand desks FAQs
Single or dual motor - which is better?
For a laptop and one screen a single motor is fine. If you have two or three monitors, a heavy PC or a top wider than 140cm, a dual motor frame is quicker, steadier and carries roughly twice the load.
Do standing desks wobble at standing height?
All desks move a little at full height. 3-stage legs, a deeper top, a crossbar and keeping the heavy kit near the legs all help. Typing on a lightweight frame at 120cm is where it shows most.
Do I need a plug socket?
Electric models need one mains socket; they only draw real power while moving. A manual crank desk or a gas spring converter needs none.
Can I fit my own worktop?
Yes, with a frame-only model. Check the frame's width range and the maximum top size, and use a top at least 18-25mm thick so the screws hold.
My standing desk has stopped moving. What should I try?
Most electric desks have a reset routine: usually unplug it for a minute, plug it back in and hold the down button until it reaches the bottom and beeps. Check the manual for your model, as the sequence varies.
Are adjustable desks worth it for home working?
If you work at a desk most of the day, the evidence from trials like SMArT Work suggests they genuinely cut sitting time. The key is a range that fits your height and presets that make switching effortless.
