What is a dual motor standing desk?
Electric sit stand desks rise and fall on telescopic legs. On cheaper models, one motor sits in a leg or the crossbar and drives both sides through a shaft. On a twin-motor model, each leg has its own drive, and the control box keeps the pair in step.
Sharing the work is what makes the difference. Each side works less hard, so the frame can lift more weight, move faster and run more quietly, and it is less likely to strain or stall under a full load. It also leaves space for a third stage in each leg, which is where the wider height range comes from.
Dual motor vs single motor: the real difference
We compared the specs of everything listed on this site. The numbers below come from manufacturer listings, not estimates.
| Single motor | Dual motor | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight capacity | 50-80kg | 100-200kg |
| Lift speed | 25-30mm per second | 32-50mm per second |
| Lowest height | Around 72-74cm | Around 60-62cm |
| Highest height | Around 117-123cm | Around 120-127cm |
| Typical legs | 2-stage | 3-stage |
| Noise | Under 50dB | Often quoted under 45dB |
| Best for | Laptops, one monitor, light tops | Two or three monitors, wide or solid wood tops, tall or short users |
For example, single-drive frames from Maidesite and Vivo are rated at 80kg and 25-30mm/s. The Flexispot ValtreX is rated at 200kg and lifts at 40mm/s, and the Desktronic HomePro manages 50mm/s.
One drive is fine for a laptop and one screen. Once you add a second monitor, an arm and a heavy top, the extra headroom starts to pay off.
Why the height range matters more than you think
Most people think about how high it goes, but the lowest point is often the bigger issue. A frame that only comes down to 72cm can be too tall for seated typing if you are under about 5ft 6in, which pushes your shoulders up. Many twin-drive frames with 3-stage legs drop to around 60-62cm, so you can set a comfortable seated height as well as a standing one.
The HSE's guidance on good posture at a display screen is to keep your forearms roughly horizontal and your wrists straight. The right height is what makes that possible.
How to choose a dual motor standing desk
Weight capacity: static vs dynamic
Some brands quote two figures. Static load is what it can hold standing still; dynamic load is what it can lift. The Flexispot CylineX Pro, for example, is rated 200kg static and 160kg dynamic. Go by the dynamic figure, and leave headroom: add up monitors, arms, PC, speakers and the desktop itself (a solid oak top can weigh 30kg or more).

Lift speed
The models we list run from about 32mm/s to 50mm/s. At 40mm/s the top travels from 72cm to 112cm in roughly 10 seconds. Faster isn't essential, but it makes you more likely to actually change position through the day.
Leg stages
3-stage legs (three telescoping sections) give a wider height range and are steadier at full height than 2-stage legs. They are the norm on better frames.
Frame width and desktop size
Adjustable frames typically span from about 110cm to 170-190cm wide, so one base can carry anything from a 120cm desk to a 160cm desk or wider. If you want a second screen side by side, 140cm wide or more is comfortable. Our dual monitor desks are all sized for it.
Anti-collision and safety
Anti-collision sensors stop and reverse the desk if it meets an obstacle, such as a chair arm or a windowsill. It is worth having when a heavy load is moving. Browse our anti-collision desks if you have children or pets around.

Memory presets and controls
Most store 2-4 heights. Set one for sitting and one for standing, and one press takes you there. Some keypads add a sit-stand reminder and USB charging; see our desks with USB ports.
Noise
Sharing the load usually means a quieter lift. Look for figures under 45-50dB, roughly a quiet conversation, which is fine for calls and shared offices.
Warranty
Check frame and motor warranties separately. Maidesite, for example, gives 5 years on the frame and 3 years on the motors.
Desk or frame only?
Many are sold as a frame without a top. That lets you fit a solid wood, bamboo or extra-wide top of your choice, or reuse a desktop you already own. Check the frame's width range and the top's thickness (25mm or more is usual), and use the screw holes or pre-drilled plates provided. If you'd rather it arrived complete, our solid wood desks come with tops fitted.

Who needs two motors?
- Two or three monitors: the weight and width add up quickly.
- Gamers and streamers: PC, monitors, lights and mics on one desk. See our desks for PC gaming.
- Corner setups: L-shaped standing desks usually need two or three drives to lift the extra surface.
- Tall or short users: the wider height range covers more people properly.
- Heavy tops: solid wood, glass and extra-deep desktops.
- Shared desks: memory presets for each person, and quick moves between them.
If you only work on a laptop, a standing desk converter that sits on your existing desk may be all you need.
Getting the most from a sit stand desk
It only helps if you change position. The NHS warns that sitting for long periods is bad for your health even if you hit your weekly exercise target. The UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines advise breaking up long periods of sitting.
- Set your sitting and standing heights as presets on day one.
- Start with short standing spells, around 15-30 minutes, and build up.
- Keep the screen at eye level when you stand. Monitor arms make this easy.
- Use a cable tray or spine so cables move with the desk instead of snagging.
- Wear supportive shoes or use an anti-fatigue mat for longer standing spells.
Dual motor desk FAQs
Is a dual motor standing desk worth it?
If you have more than a laptop and one screen, yes. You get roughly double the weight capacity of a typical single-drive model, a faster lift and a lower minimum height. For light setups, the cheaper option works fine.
Are they more stable?
Stability comes mostly from the frame: the leg design, the crossbar and how well it is assembled. Twin-drive models tend to have sturdier 3-stage legs and steel frames, so they are usually steadier at full height, but a well-built one-motor frame can be steady too.
Are they quieter?
Usually. Each side works less hard, and many are quoted under 45dB. Noise depends on the build and the load, so check the listed figure.
How much weight can they hold?
Models on this page range from about 100kg to 200kg. Use the dynamic (lifting) figure where one is given, not the static one.
Do they use a lot of electricity?
No. They only draw power while moving, and the control box uses very little on standby.
Can I fit my own top?
Yes. Check the width range, mounting points and the top's weight, and use a top at least 25mm thick so the screws have something to bite into.
